This is an epic track. Epic. We like to call this the “loose ends montage song” – but that doesn’t do it enough justice. The song marches along, steady, calmly, driving the emotion behind Adam reading Fiona’s letter, it pounds like a heartbeat and you can feel how excited and terrified he is to be reading it. The beautiful shots of Dave and Sadie, Anya waiting at the restaurant, Fiona accepting her faults, culminating in a bright, innocent, youthful smile from Adam makes for yet another memorable Degrassi moment and song.

A beautiful song, it was used in the context as a piece of score – and a great one at that. The drums kick in over the kiss – looks like the kiss of a lifetime – and it’s raw power just drive the scene forward into a form of awkward, sweet serenity. In the mix, we kept raising the volume, pass after pass, do drive that kiss deeper into the viewers’ minds.

This is a lyrical song, meaning it’s placement relies on the lyrics fitting the scene. Even though it’s tucked in the background, it definitely replates to what’s going on. We know Fiona is still drinking. We know it has to do with Adam. We’re all waiting for these two to fall, for Fiona to get another kink in her armour. Ideas for this placement swirled around romantic R&B to plain silence, but the lyrics in Waiting To Fall won the day.

Beautifully directed, beautifully shot, scripted, acted and cut, mixed and produced, this scene was unlike any we’d seen so far in Degrassi. A perfect storm created a retro feel in the Dot, as if it were a soda and sundae shop from the 50s. Maiko Watson’s track here was the cherry on that sundae.

The Heavy. Great name. Great band. Oh and the scene, well, it really hurt to watch it. Of course we had to watch it again, and again, and again, to try some songs out and line the right ones up. Poor Eli. This was more of a “though guy” moment and you’d think the Big Bad Wolf is Fitz – it isn’t. It’s Eli. He’s fearless, like a wolverine versus a grizzly bear. Watch yourself.

Leif was something of a guiding light in my life at a time when I needed him. One of the best show I’ve ever seen was with about ten other people at The Horseshoe Tavern and Leif playing his music, entwined with Bob Dylan and Neil Young covers. He stroked his guitar with his violin bow and demonstrated his mastery over his music. I’ll listen to the whole song for that one lyric: “and how, without knowing, can you just go by chance.”

It’s no traditional song, and it actually broke the traditional Degrassi practice of a rock – pop – singer/songwriter club with relatable lyrics, instead it’s more about the general feeling inside Fiona’s head, “and I wish, and I wish”.

It was fantastic in the mix, as we eliminated a jarring frequency in the song that interfered with the frequency of the keys scratching the car, and the song and the scratch both popped. The song is very simple, “where did the good times go?” and Clare’s parents’ divorce seemed like a good place for that question. Another really cool independent Toronto band, the entire reason for this placement was singer Joan Smith’s killer pipes, she sold the song entirely on rocking vocals. Afie Jurvanen – AKA Bahamas – usually rocks out at his shows – so you’ll seldom find him performing Sunshine Blues, albeit I do believe it’s one of the best compositions by a Canadian in a while. Go look it up, read the lyrics, interpret it how you’d like. To me, it’s about the eternal longing the sun has for his true love, the moon.

Adaline holds a special place with us, we just love her music. This song was actually a demo and almost never saw the light of day, until Adaline herself felt I should hear it, just for fun. I was instantly moved and was sold right away, I had to find a place for it. The following week, this scene appeared and in my mind, it was the only song for the spot. Low and behold it became somewhat Fiona's theme music. In one of the verses, Adaline sings "love takes no prisoners, and some die alone", and her voice wavers softly, and I had to capture that moment in the show.
