Degrassi 1036

The Way We Get By, Pt. 2
Original Air Date: February 25, 2011
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Black Candles by Kae Sun
www.kaesunmusic.com
This is actually a very sad song – go read the lyrics and find out what it’s about. It’s message merits investigation into the song and the artist, and it’s tone and mood set it to Riley’s scene, but the two have little else to do with each other.  We really wanted Black Candles to see the light of day, and think the Degrassi fans will give it it’s proper moment.

The Fool by Santa Clara
www.santaclaramusic.com
Tim Langley came across our radar and we shook hands in The Library Bar in Toronto’s Royal York Hotel in 2009.  Since then his band, Santa Clara, has taken off, and we’re real happy to have their song in the show.  The placement is awesome, over three scenes, tying them all together in a nice bow.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Room by The New Rags
www.thenewrags.com
The New Rags are a wicked fun indie band from NYC – check out their rendition of “The Cascades”.  We needed some fun in the Ravine, but some edgy, non-linear fun, because we all know what everyone down there is up to…
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Licence Plate Eyes by Steve Poltz
www.poltz.com
We won’t rag on Drew for taking shrooms – that’s between him and his mom (ouch). Instead, we’ll try to get into his head – and this song puts us right in that zone at that moment (for better or worse!).  PSA moment: Drugs are bad.  But Steve Poltz is awesome.

Original Air Date: February 18, 2011

Time To Win by Down With Webster
www.myspace.com/downwithwebster
We love, love, love Down With Webster – we had to have them in Degrassi.  We tried this over a bunch of scenes until this one landed – and it couldn’t have looked better.  Another rocking song to score Drew’s life at Degrassi.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
So Easy by Gina Cutillo
www.ginacutillo.com
Gina caught up with Stephen Stohn on twitter and offered up her music.  The song made it’s way to us and then into the cut.  Just goes to show you, if you never try, you never win!

Breakdown by Ketch Harbour Wolves
www.ketchharbourwolves.ca
Ketch Harbour Wolves are sincerely genuinely nice gentlemen, and as their band name suggests, they’re music is as warm and inviting as the picturesque image of a distant wolf howling to a distant moon.  Wrapped in a sepia tone of guitar reverb, this song and it’s lyrics give us shivers still.  It brings a little maturity to the otherwise immature Drew and Bianca.

Chewed Up by Gloria Cycles
www.myspace.com/gloriacycles
We were just looking for fun and a little silliness, and this song fit the bill.  We love the vocals and the lyrics are perfect for Drew’s shenanigans.  Just a ton of fun.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gasoline Handshake by The British Columbians
www.thebritishcolumbians.com
A dirty rock song for this gritty scene, The British Columbians deliver angst and uncertainty – but we know Drew’s going to win, right?  Another point for the Degrassi editors who championed this handshake and lit it on fire.

When Love Takes Over, Pt. 2
Original Air Date: February 11, 2011
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I Wish You Love by Sunflow
www.myspace.com/sunflowmusic
A really cute, lovely love song – this played over the “Lovers’ Lunch”.  With all the heartbreak and drama already this season, we were beginning to wonder if this sweet love song would fit anywhere!  Low and behold, you can’t take the love out of Degrassi and Lovers’ Lunch was the perfect spot.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
She Hott by Jinaz
www.killersongs.com/jinaz.php
Check out the flute in this song.  Remind you of anything? The Three Tenners perhaps??  The flute and the R&B felt so good we could have sworn it was ripped from “Frag You” – or even a Three Tenners original.  The song just matched Dave, period.  We love the instrumentation and the lay-up in the scene felt just great.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Peacock Dance by The Smooth Maria
www.mattkanelos.com
This is an epic track.  Epic.  We like to call this the “loose ends montage song” – but that doesn’t do it enough justice.  The song marches along, steady, calmly, driving the emotion behind Adam reading Fiona’s letter, it pounds like a heartbeat and you can feel how excited and terrified he is to be reading it.  The beautiful shots of Dave and Sadie, Anya waiting at the restaurant, Fiona accepting her faults, culminating in a bright, innocent, youthful smile from Adam makes for yet another memorable Degrassi moment and song.

When Love Takes Over, Pt. 1
Original Air Date: February 11, 2011
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doesn’t Matter by The Deadly Syndrome
www.thedeadlysyndrome.com
A beautiful song, it was used in the context as a piece of score – and a great one at that.  The drums kick in over the kiss – looks like the kiss of a lifetime – and it’s raw power just drive the scene forward into a form of awkward, sweet serenity.  In the mix, we kept raising the volume, pass after pass, do drive that kiss deeper into the viewers’ minds.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just Another Kiss by Bodhi Jones
www.bodhijones.com
Bodhi was the singer on this track when it was just a demo.  In the Degrassi world, he’s the official artist on the song, and his sweet tones do it justice in The Dot.  It played kind of funny against Dave’s attitude.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Waiting To Fall by Andrew Creelman
This is a lyrical song, meaning it’s placement relies on the lyrics fitting the scene.  Even though it’s tucked in the background, it definitely replates to what’s going on.  We know Fiona is still drinking.  We know it has to do with Adam.  We’re all waiting for these two to fall, for Fiona to get another kink in her armour.  Ideas for this placement swirled around romantic R&B to plain silence, but the lyrics in Waiting To Fall won the day.

Red Lights by The Fantasy Defender
www.thefantasydefender.com
A smooth bass line gives a great vibe to this party - it's night time and hearts are throbbing.  Red Lights is telling Sav to STOP - even thought Holly J is asking him to continue - and the pounding beat won't give us an answer.  What will Sav choose?

Passing Afternoon by Iron & Wine
www.ironandwine.com
Chosen by the director, Stefan Brogren, the sweet tones of Sam Beam's Passing Afternoon give this scene proper meaning - it's so sincere and introspective.  As Eli and Clare lie beneath the stars in each others' arms, the song plays like cicadas in the background, pleasant, present, a lovely soundtrack to the Degrassi lovers under the night sky.

Hummingbird by Imaginary Cities
www.imaginarycities.ca
Hope and a little magic - Jenna never stops being Jenna. The song  the magical fairy-dusted Degrassi Wishing Star fundraiser.  Usually the song moves the scene - but Jenna's spirit definitely moves the song, and her bright smile conquers it all in a glance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Still Believe In Love by Jacksoul
www.jacksoul.com
A tender moment for Wesley, we had to be delicate in choosing a song, for obvious reasons. Hayden Neil always sang with such sexy passion, and Wesley sure does feel it - and fortunately for him, no one else does.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Could It Be You by Hwood
www.myspace.com/officialhwood
A reprise for this song, it's meant to capture the dreariness of the post-lockdown "dance".  A huge, fist-pumping song like this playing for a half-dozen uninterested kids is just plain wrong.  When Jenna kisses Sav, the song pumps up, but just for them.

If It Mean A Lot To You by A Day To Remember
www.adtr.com
Adam needs this.  He's coming into his own - realizing he can make things happen in his life - he's not as helpless as he once seemed.  This does mean a lot to him, more than a lot, it's really his moment to shine, to prove his worth to everyone.  Let's hope it's good enough for Fiona...

Daydreaming by Nat Jay
www.myspace.com/natjay
We're in dreamland, obviously.  This is a tender moment for Adam - he's vulnerable, excited, scared, how will Fiona react?  It's a pure daydream moment where none of those questions matter, it's just really nice to think about what could be.

Tonight, I Love You by The Latency
www.thelatencyofficial.com
Eli seems to get all the good songs.  A really epic moment between Clare and Eli, we discover that they can get through anything together, so long as they work together.  Clare's going through her own stuff...but finds some strength in being there for Eli.  This might even be the moment where the two fall in love...epic!
